Larry Alcala

I hardly noticed it then, or gave it much thought, but I really enjoyed Mr. Larry Alcala’s (1926-2002) Slice of Life comics. I used to skip everything else in the paper and leafed straight through to the comics section. He made a lot of other titles but I was only familiar with this one. I think it was because Mr. Alcala’s drawings seemed to come alive even when I knew that they were just drawings printed on paper. He didn’t need to write words to tell a story because he drew it all. Everyone on the page was doing something that represented everyday life in the Philippines and it was magical.

And of course, it was always fun to look for this iconic face on the page. I honestly think that Slice of Life was more enjoyable than “Where’s Waldo?” books.

It’s my dream to, one day, be able to achieve this kind of synergy in my drawings. Right now, most of what I do are one character illustrations with hardly any background or props because I know that my skills are still limited but hopefully, if I practice long and hard enough, I’ll get to this level of craftsmanship.

I’d like to to think that teachers are doctors of the mind. We have the responsibility and the privilege to aid ailing minds. Let’s do it right.

Dear self,

Stop looking for things that aren’t there and treasure the things that are.

I’m currently taking a much needed break from finishing my teaching portfolio requirement and I’m posting about this because whatever space in my brain that’s left for “miscellaneous” thoughts has been occupied by this.

Yesterday, I found a brochure with all the new Canon digital cameras on it and I fell in love with these two models. I’ve had my IXUS V3 since forever. Forever roughly translates to 7 years. Although my camera’s working fine and I love it so much, I do want higher specs to play with without having to shell out for a DSLR. I find the fact that EVERYONE is already carrying a DSLR extremely annoying (mostly because a lot of these DSLR owners pretentiously call themselves photographers just because they own a DSLR but they don’t really put in the real work of improving their skills at photography) and I’m perfectly happy with carrying around a more portable camera since I’ve no plans of going professional.

The PowerShot SX210 IS package at that particular store where I got the brochure from already includes a 4GB memory stick and a PIXMA printer. I think it’s actually Canon’s promo so you’ll get the same deal wherever you buy.

I’ve never really had to save up for something this big before but I’m determined to get one of these for myself. Let’s see if I can be the adult my birth certificate says I already am. It’s time to make my first big purchase with my own hard-earned money.

The only thing I miss about being in PR is the brainstorming about plans. I like creative planning.

Some girls are unhappy because they do it to themselves. Being happy is a choice. You won’t be happy if you keep making decisions that you already know will make you sad.
